What is the most effective way to stop smoking?

I want to quit smoking and I've used the patch before but it was the Equate brand which did not stick to my arm very well causing me more stress. If you've decided to quit smoking, congratulations on what is possibly the most important decision you'll make for your health and longevity. That said you need to be prepared for the possibility of experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine is the ingredient in cigarettes that causes addiction, it's something our body craves, and is the single biggest reason most continue smoking. Effectively, nicotine affects the neurotransmitters in your brain and causes the release of dopamine. When this daily stimulation is removed, (which is what happens when you quit smoking), your brain effectively cries out, "What's wrong, I need some stimulation."

If you're a friend of someone who has decided to quit smoking, now is the time you can show support, and understand the nervousness and anxiety they may feel. These are normal feelings, but may require extra patience on your part. Simply be a good friend and encourage them to continue along the path to becoming a non-smoker.

Speaking for myself, I love coffee and while I quit smoking years ago, I have yet to give up coffee (don't plan to either). If you're trying to make radical changes, my advice is to choose one or the other, but not both at the same time, it could be overwhelming.

Here is a short list of possible withdrawal symptoms, and how to overcome them.

CIGARETTE CRAVINGS

As mentioned earlier, when you make the decision to become a non-smoker, you will no longer receive that small dose of dopamine, so it's natural you'll crave a cigarette. When you understand the problem that's step #1, in dealing with the problem and what's needed is an immediate distraction. What worked for me when I quit smoking was to take a walk, possibly do deep breathing exercises, or some quick stretching exercises. None of these are a magic bullet, but each can take your mind off of smoking.

COUGHING

In all likelihood, you'll experience instances of coughing, while I cannot and do not offer medical advice. (Please consult your doctor or health care professional) in most instances this is simply your body ridding itself of poisons accumulated over the years.

SLEEP CYCLE

There is nothing more enjoyable, then waking after a good night's rest. Smokers normally never experience good rest since they have difficulty breathing and may be awakened with fits of coughing. Now that you've made the decision to quit smoking, you can look forward to waking full of energy, instead of desiring the first cigarette of the day.

DIZZY SPELLS

There are few things more disconcerting than a dizzy spell which will immediately make you wonder, "Oh my god, what's wrong". In most cases, this is simply your body adjusting to a better flow of oxygen and should pass within a few days.

CHEST TIGHTNESS

Imagine a balloon filled with only a small amount of air, then suddenly receiving more air, obviously the skin of the balloon will become tighter. Now imagine that balloon is your lungs, receiving more oxygen than it has in years, naturally your lungs will become tighter, it's normal and natural. If the feeling persists, of course consult your doctor or health care professional.

BECOMING ANGRY AND IRRITABLE

It's natural for your body to miss those small doses of dopamine triggered by nicotine, when it does sometimes you may experience moments of irritability, depression or anger. When this happens, do something else; don't allow these feelings to control your life.

While this is not meant as the end-all for smoking related withdrawal symptoms, it should make you realize what you may be feeling is normal and natural. You've taken an important step; continue to walk forward towards a healthy and full life as a non-smoker.
