Can quitting smoking cause severe problems or death in elderly life long smokers?

This is a concern being voiced around my workplace (San Diego VA Hospital), especially among the elderly smokers here (lots and lots of them). Most of the people in authority I’ve talked to say no, but some say the benefits outweigh the risks. That sounds like there could be some possibility of a dangerous result from quitting. And two people I’ve known and helped take care of have died from things that hadn’t even been a concern before they quit.

Sometimes you can have problems if you quit too fast or cold turkey because your body becomes mentally and physically addicted and depends on the cigs. Just quit a reasonable pace. The benefits of not smoking will outweigh the risks of quiting. Use the patch and/or the gum. You'll start saving some money too, from not buying all the cigs.

K...so ive tried quitting a more than enough times...im 22, i have been smoking for almost 9 years....gross.
i think i may have a addictive personality, i wont go out in public unless i have smokes, i think i may have slight anxiety and it gives me something to do... plus im afraid of smoking when i drink... i smoke so much when im drunk..
anyways, this Allen Carr guy, wrote this magical book, and ive heard of many that it actually works and they quit...they finish the book and they are basically healed...what the hell? is this real? has anyone tried it? im debating...its a lot of money, but i do wanna quit, just im not sure if im ready too.....damnit... i love to smoke.

Depression is very common in a world that can be cruel and demanding. Symptoms can affect day-to-day life and can become very distressing. Treatments include talking treatments and antidepressant medicines. Many people who suffer from depression will visit their GP for help and are subsequently prescribed antidepressant medicines. In my opinion this should be the last resort. Talking treatments such as NLP ( Neuro Linguistic Programming ) and the more widely known CBT ( Cognitive Behavioural Therapy )are effective solutions to combating depression. At my practice in Hertfordshire I treat many people for depression with a very high success rate. Treatment takes time to work but has a good chance of success. Some people have recurring episodes of depression and require long-term treatment to keep symptoms away.

When a person becomes depressed it can affect all aspects of their life i.e. work, relationships, sex life and their social life. I have treated many clients at my practice in Hertfordshire who find it difficult to motivate themselves at work or even in their relationships. We all feel depressed at times but generally we are able to pick ourselves up again after a few days or as some might say snap out of it. However, it is time to seek professional help when you are not able to overcome these issues.

CBT Herts is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviours, not external things, like people, situations and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel and act better even if the situation does not change. CBT makes you challenge your own thought pattern and change old beliefs you may have that are holding you back. It is not about merely thinking positively but viewing a situation differently.

I would generally recommend CBT Herts for people who are suffering depression ,however, if this does not work why not try another form of cognitive therapy which is NLP. NLP Herts is not as commonly known as CBT but can be just as affective at treating people who are suffering from depression. NLP, Herts works more with what we might see, feel, hear when we are depressed. For example at my practice in Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted I would ask a client if when they are depressed do they see any specific imagery, hear anything or feel anything specifically. Some clients say they feel empty in their stomach or their imagery is distorted. So on this basis we would work on their imagery. Also Hypnotherapy Herts can help with depression as this puts a client in a deep state of relaxation and talks to their sub conscious about issues they might be struggling with.

I use both types of Cognitive Therapy at my practice in Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted to see what is most affective for the client. Each client is different and some people respond better to CBT and others to NLP. It really depends on the individual, the initial problems they have and how much they want to change negative thinking patterns. My aim is to guide a person past their negative thought pattern and old beliefs to a more positive frame of mind.

I quit smoking 3 days ago. I'm feeling really really good now but I still crave a smoke after my meals. I gave up cold turkey but I'm wondering when I'll stop thinking about smoking. Does any one know?

I do - I quit a year and a half ago after smoking for almost 30 years. The bad news - the craving and obsession with it never entirely go away. They just lessen over time. There will probably be a point after about a year (especially with a cocktail) when you will feel brave enough (and desperate enough) to take "just one drag". You will be so sure that it will be the greatest thing ever. Here's the good news - it will suck! You will choke, it will taste bad and the next day you will wake up feeling like you smoked a whole pack in one evening.
I had no trouble quitting, just staying off of them.
I wish you luck. If you have too much trouble, talk to the Doctor about a prescription for Wellbutrin.
